NW Wine Experience

This past weekend, Paul Landaker from NW Wine Experience, made a brief visit to the Umpqua Valley wine country. There are several wonderful wineries in the valley including two he particularly enjoyed: Abacela Winery and Spangler Vineyards. He also found a great place to stay and a wonderful place to dine.

Abacela winery, founded in 1995, is considered a pioneer in producing wines normally associated with Portugal and Spain including, Tempranillo and Albariño. They also create exceptional wines including Malbec, Syrah and many others. The winery and tasting room sit on a hill overlooking their vineyards.

In 2004 Spangler Vineyards purchased an established winery and vineyards, including old vine Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1968-1971. Spangler Vineyards is an award winning winery in the Umpqua Valley that is known for their big bold reds with a focus on producing reserve quality Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. They also produce Syrah, Petite Sirah and Viognier. We had the pleasure of meeting owner and wine maker Pat Spangler and were treated to a tour of the winery and tasted many exceptional wines. In his own words, he is obsessed with creating truly special wines. Spangler Vineyards was recently awarded best of show at the Newport Seafood & Wine Festival for their 2015 Petite Verdot.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Roseburg. They offer a great complimentary breakfast each morning, workout facilities and an indoor pool & Jacuzzi. Thanks to the suggestion from the folks at Abacela, we also enjoyed an exceptional dinner in downtown Roseburg at the True Kitchen + Bar. They feature New American Cuisine and Craft Cocktails in what is now know as the Historical Downtown District.

All in all a very fun, but brief visit, we hope to go back again soon.

NW Wine Experience

Some of the best Walla Walla wineries have been in Portland the past couple days. Yesterday, some were represented at the private tasting at E&R Wine shop. This is always a great event to meet winery representatives and have a chance to buy the wines. Today's Taste of Walla Walla at Leftbank Annex was another great opportunity to meet the winemakers and try their latest vintages. @ Leftbank Annex ... See MoreSee Less

Attended a fantastic horizontal tasting of 2010 Pinot Noir's from Oregon, California, France and New Zealand. It was wonderful to see how well this vintage is doing ten years later. Most still had great fruit presence and structure. As you would expect, each wine had it's own personality. ... See MoreSee Less
